LAUNCH SUCCESS
Thursday March 6th 2008
A new campaign to try to tackle Britain’s litter problem attracted thousands of website hits within the first few hours of launching. The central message behind the People Clearing Litter campaign is that public bodies will never have the money or manpower to tackle the litter problem fully, so people concerned about their surroundings should pick the litter themselves, rather than waste time complaining about it.
It seems to have been a popular message. Within hours of the website launching, it had received visits from more than 3,500 different people, more than 350 of them becoming registered members, promising to record their own litter-clearing exploits on the site.
‘This proves that there are large numbers of people out there, eager to do their bit,’ said the campaign’s founder, Steve McCormack. ‘And many are attracted by the opportunity to become part of a national team, whose collective efforts can have tangible and visible results.’
The website enables members to make reports about where they’ve cleared litter, and talk to like-minded members in their own areas, to identify eyesores needing attention and collaborate in clearing them.
Visibility of the campaign will be achieved by people wearing campaign badges while they pick up litter, and tying up the bags of litter they collect with green People Clearing Litter ribbon, and leaving them by council litter bins, at public rubbish dumps or outside their own houses.
Ends.
